Brainstorming additions to the Turkey Cake recipe (thank you, chow.com) went something like this:
Me: I have to alter the recipe to make it my own. Someone already did it with a layer of green beans and fried onions, so I need to think of something else… BREAD. I should do a layer of bread. It needs more carbs.
Mom: You already have a layer of bread. It’s called the stuffing layer.
Me: It needs more carbs.
Mom: The whole thing IS carbs.
Me: Yah, but it needs MORE carbs. Fine, no layer. Maybe rolls edging the bottom of the cake? Or something.
Mom: They’d have to be really small to fit on the cake stand. Too small.
Me: Cornbread! I’ll make an edge of cornbread. Like, a wide stripe pressed into the mashed potatoes.
Mom: Stars. Make ‘em stars. I have the cookie cutters.
Me: Yesss.

So that’s what I did - took the original recipe and kicked it up a notch with cornbread stars and praline topping mixed in with the marshmallows. Redonkulous.
1. My mom’s turkey meatloaf recipe (approximately, ingredients/measurements from memory): 2 lbs lean ground turkey, 1 egg, 2/3 cup ground crackers, 1/2 cup milk, 1/3 cup small diced onions, 1/3 cup small diced bell pepper, 1 tsp salt (I always add more, ground turkey is so flavorless), ground pepper, mustard, worcestershire sauce.
2. Box of apple stuffing, prepared as directed
3. Half can of cranberry sauce, chunked up
4. Large can of yams, drained and whipped + 1/4 cup brown sugar and grated fresh nutmeg
5. Mashed potatoes
6. Cornbread, made thin and cut into stars
7. Praline topping (brown sugar, sweetened coconut, chopped pecans, flour, melted butter) mixed with marshmallows
8. Gravy drizzled over most layers when served
